With all the devastation in the Midwest and a few weird days around the studio, it was nice to receive a little sunshine in our mailbox this week — the May/June 2011 issue of Colorado Springs Style magazine including a feature story on Dolan and his work. The article coincides with a huge restock shipment we sent off this month to The Squash Blossom, our Colorado Springs retailer at 2531 W Colorado Ave. The article’s author, William Reed, prepared for the article with one of the most thoughtful phone interviews to date. Here’s a peek at the feature and an article excerpt..
Geiman in the Rough
Artist’s Work Blossoms from Life’s Leftovers
by: William Reed
Dolan Geiman feels most at home in an abandoned, ramshackle farmhouse, the kind with the skeleton of the structure exposed to the elements, and the piles of weathered wood huddled around a chimney that still points accusingly at the sky. That’s where he finds pieces of long ago lives with stories to tell.
Geiman tries to share those stories through his artwork, much of it formed from hunks of wood and metal that he rescues from oblivion. He calls his style “contemporary art with a southern accent.” It is a collision of folk art and pop art-the warm charm of rural Virginia where the artist was born and bred coming up against the cold edges introduced by his migration north to a studio in an old meat-packing district of Chicago.
Several pieces of the artist’s folk-meets-pop work are now on display at The Squash Blossom gallery in Old Colorado City, with subjects ranging from birds to hipsters in sunglasses.
Colorado Spring residents, enjoy Dolan’s work at The Squash Blossom during the upcoming Old Colorado City Artwalk on June 3 from 5pm-8pm. Additional information about the Artwalk is here. The Squash Blossom has one of the largest collections of Dolan Geiman work available for sale outside of Chicago.
Or to meet us in person, head to Denver, Colorado July 2-4 for the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. An all-originals show, our booth will be stocked with Panel Paintings, Rescued Wood Constructions, and new original mixed media artworks.
